If you close your eyes half way you can see the image in front of you in the style of a vignette. A vignette is also a short description. Moments of time are short snippets of life that sometimes only last a blink. This blink is like a physical capture of the image of a vignette or sketch. A sketch is a rough drawing of what is seen, it is also a short play. My “Sketches” series are an accumulation of processes parallel to life events that are routine and new experiences layered together as a sketch of a vignette. I started these pieces with a physical sketch on linoleum block. I quickly cut away into this block. The repeated printing of the image etched into the block symbolizes routine. I printed the routine in different colors, never cleaning my palate with each print. Just building on top of each color. The next thing I did was to wash away the color where the block prints intersected. As if to pause during routines to think clearly. After this I used color pencil to color in some of the negative space in between the block print. Like experiences separate from routine. Then over this I lay down a drawing using black sumi ink and a bamboo brush. The drawing was of a stem with leaves clipped off a tree. The clipping represents beauty and what we strive to be or is expected of us from society. I used black sumi ink because expectations are black and white with little room to stray away. I then took cut outs of colored paper and put them on top. These represent experiences that are new, resilient, salient, that occur on top of everything below. The white line drawn with in the circular cut outs represent how a novel experience becomes part of our routine in that it becomes a memory thought about routinely. An influential experience. Then I pull all this together as a vignette. With the use of the pastel shading, light and airy. Because these are simply sketches, short vignettes of our moments in life.
