According to Western and Eastern occult traditions, souls are created in pairs. Once they start their long process of incarnations, they split into two souls each one of these souls contains aspects that are missing in the other soul. This myth is known by the soulmate, another soul when it merges with your soul you will feel wholeness. Many believe in the idea of a soulmate that there is another being that will make them feel complete. The thing is you need to feel whole within yourself and not spend your time looking for what is missing in someone else’s existence because lack attracts lackness and only wholeness attracts wholeness. My argument is that you are not missing any pieces to be complete, that all the pieces exist within you and you only need to dig deeper for them to appear. This artwork consists of a complementary pattern to the other where the missing pieces in one pattern form the other pattern. I choose to use the paper weaving technique to execute this artwork by applying scars in paper and inserting strips of gold leaf paper to form a pattern. The weaving technique symbolizes two souls emerging in one soul's existence. The creation of the two patterns lands under one of Gestalt principles which is Closure. Since the closure principle occurs when an element is incomplete or a space is enclosed, if enough of the shape is indicated or hinted at, the viewer will subconsciously fill in the missing information. Accordingly, I decided that I would represent the soul in a golden square, and since the concept of a soulmate requires two souls to complement each other, I came up with two designs representing two souls based on emptying parts of the square shape to form one soul while the filled parts form the other soul.

Saudi Arabia
Hi! My name is Samah. I am a self-taught artist based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I use art to detangle my thoughts and make sense of the world around me. I indulge in my own existence and believe that everything is connected. That we are all souls that exist in the same dimension working towards upgrading to the next one. We all have the responsibility to awaken each other and we are all doing that whether we are aware or not, by working on ourselves individually we contribute to the elevation of the collective consciousness. I work with fabric, thread, paper, clay, gold leaf, and mosaic. I like materials that are malleable and delicate. I like it when I can break a medium apart and put it back together. I push it to be adaptive the same way a human has to adapt to its circumstances. My art is a continuous dance between light and shadow, an abstract manifestation of letting go. I am in a constant state of letting go of my old self and peeling the layers of darkness to meet the truth. I connect to elements and adapt them to be an extension of the battle in my mind and soul. My art is evidence that I have reached the end of the tunnel and made my peace with a nagging thought. I work in a repetitive manner to reconcile the opposites, mend the broken and hand you my version of the truth.
