The flowers of the evil fears, turn to the light. Inspired from the sunflowers of Van Gogh I tried using various non conventional materials to give the powerful movement and impetuousness of this work which is a symbol.I used old frame ,gold leaves, crystals of Val St Lambert, smalti and gold tesserae from Venice,Japanese papers ,objects I started experimenting and working with mosaic 45 years ago It was 1991 when the Japanese publishing the Yomiuri Shimbun organized 3 personal exhibitions of my works in Osaka and Tokyo In the catalogue published by them was written "Pelagia Angelopoulou is one of the worlds most exciting mosaicists" The Director of the Greek National Gallery Dimitrios Papastamos wrote Pelagia Angelopoulou blends mosaic and painting in an ideal expression. She takes a full advantage of her thorough knowledge of the main achievements in the history of mosaic art while making the most of her remarkable technical skill and original inspiration, introduces a new concept and gives a new dimension to the art of mosaics. The German Art historian Stefan Skowron wrote: what makes the works of Pelagia Angelopoulou modern and far superior to those of others is her relentless drive to make them sculptural...The image becomes an object which becomes credible because it is visible and belongs to reality. Thus she connects the present with history .She interweaves the two and gives them a new potential Impact. I see mosaic as a mixture of painting and sculpture and I am interested in aesthetically constructing forms and volumes, avoiding the trap of simply exploiting the charm of bright and colorful smalti, natural and semi-precious stones. Gradually I started to use other materials like found objects, Japanese paper tissues, crystals etc thus creating a kind of mixed media.

To be an artist means to me first of all to exist in a life full of substance and sense. Second, to perform the continuous effort to develop new visions, forms, and ways of aesthetic expression. My artistic nature found its expression through the visual arts. I studied at The Athens University of Fine Arts where a little later I came back to teach. I have chosen mosaic as a medium because it was unexplored in the fields of contemporary arts, I never forced the evolution of my personal style which was developed through research, work and experimentation. I see mosaic as a mixture of painting and sculpture and I am interested in aesthetically constructing forms and volumes, avoiding the trap of simply exploiting the charm of bright and colourful smalti, natural and semi-precious stones. Gradually I started to use other materials like found objects, Japanese paper tissues, crystals etc. thus creating a kind of mixed media. Lately I started to work with collages which I developed through research, experimentation and work, creating forms based on painterly principles, resulting in homogeneous compositions and not fragmentary images placed next to each other. What is common in both mosaic and collage is that I have to deconstruct materials, papers, stones etc and re-construct them as something new. I have had a career that would be considered international by exhibiting in many countries around the world and it was the same with my works which could be found in private collections and historical monuments in numerous countries. My career had been what would be considered international by exhibiting in many countries around the world .
