(now I know I am that candy.) Mixed media piece composed of acrylic, gouache, vine charcoal, glass beads, and putty on stretched canvas. A square piece with many layers of texture, removed, added, like patchwork. This piece, for me, is about the nature of preconceived notions and how one might get fixated on the idea of something, rather than letting it be what it is. I vividly remember as a child despising the taste of any watermelon flavored candy. I realize that I could not let go of the distinct feeling of being let down and that I was being fed some sugar pill. I couldn’t accept the fact that the candy was merely inspired by the idea of watermelon and is not the real thing. I had to separate the idea of what real watermelons taste like from the taste in my mouth. A silly story, about candy of all things, but I think this sort of thing happens a lot in life and often in other more harmful ways. We hold on to ideas of what we think things ought to be and aren’t always able to just accept what we see before us.

Justin W John (he/him) American (b. 1981) Justin W John is an abstract artist whose practice focuses on physical painting and digital media art. His work addresses identity, the subconscious, gender and sexuality, culture, and societal ties to technology through autobiographical ruminations. He works intuitively, allowing each piece to develop its personality. Justin’s work bridges internal and external, translating non-physical states into gestural forms, patterns, and markings through his meticulous brush and knife strokes. His introspective narratives act as commentary that speaks to our commonality. Justin W John was born in the Philippines and raised in Virginia and Maryland. He graduated from Maryland Institute, College of Art, in 2003 with a BFA in graphic design. Justin’s work has been in solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, and art fairs throughout the western United States, including Yellowstone Art Museum and The Other Art Fair. Justin was recently selected as a recipient of studio space—part of Surel’s Place Studios in the Live-Work-Create district of Garden City for the 2022-23 season. Justin has also created commissioned public art for the city of Boise, ID.
