This painting is inspired by The Ecstasy of Saint Paul by Nicholas Poussin. The artwork portrays seven characters, each dyed with a specific color of robe, with specific mannerism. The colors correspond to the seven chakras of the human body and their outward manifestation in angelic form, from the root (red) all the way to the crown chakra (violet). The central character (turquoise, throat chakra) embraces and preaches the truth with both arms open and swept away by the ecstasy of God's Light. He is carried by the root (red) and solar plexus (yellow ocher) chakras, and is grounded by his heart kept close (heart chakra, green, closest to the observer) with unconditional love. The Sacral chakra (orange, top left of the painting) presents a hidden method to reach enlightenment, as it corresponds to the sexual organs and Tantric Yoga (the use of sex as means of enlightenment) can take us straight to the crown chakra. Amidst the exuberance of this experience, the meditator (indigo, blank head) sits quietly, searching for the truth within and how best to align his mind's eye to the sight of Cosmic Consciousness. Finally, we notice the crown chakra (violet) at the top, pointing toward the sun, the ultimate truth that shines so bright, leading the way from darkness to light. It is said, that with regular practice of yoga and meditation, the individual opens his third eye and it sees none but a blazing sphere of white light. Oil paint is used in this artwork to portray a natural and organic nature to this phenomenon, as it should be.

I find the visionary works of classical masters of the Renaissance and Baroque Era as major influences for my artistic style, mannerism, and subject matter. I am constantly fascinated by the use of coded language and symbolism in art and painting to communicate complicated concepts, ideologies, emotions, and mythology (Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Tibetan, Hindu). I believe that the divine speaks to us in metaphors, and as such, find refuge in expressing my understanding and experiences of the divine through symbolism. Although the subject matter of my works does not abide by reality and the laws of physics, my style in rendering is nevertheless grounded in realistic figuration, much like the surrealists and visionary artists of the past. I initiate my artistic endeavors with an instinctive urge to express intricate spiritual subjects with their underlying concepts and emotions according to my perception and understanding of reality, and layer my work with realistic depictions of the protagonists and the surreal mythical atmosphere to render it more comprehensible. I do not restrict my palette to a specific range of colors, as life is limitless, and art is an immaculate reflection of life through an individualized lens. My works are evidences of cathartic experimentation. I specifically enjoy ornamental symbols and patterns introduced in the works of the great masters, and as such, have discovered an interesting use of the 7th letter of the Armenian alphabet “Է” in my works.
