I painted this shortly after George Floyd’s murder as a way to process grief. Somehow what emerged was this celebration of color, movement, life. It didn’t seem to match the pain of the moment, but I now wonder if it points toward the healing being offered if we actually do the hard work of change and truth telling. White supremacy and its violent systems can be transformed into systems of equity and liberation. The colors released when our collective trauma is healed are vivid, brilliant, vigorous. The colors of Blackness and Black Magic are especially vivid and powerful after so many years of trauma and violence. The colors of change can be beautiful. This painting is dedicated to racial equity and the movement to bring transformative justice, healing and lasting systemic change in our country. I also wrote an anti-racism song with the same name, found on all streaming platforms. “To overcome racial inequality, we must confront our history.” - Equal Justice Initiative
