Another part of the series; 'Essentials/Non-essentials' inspired by Lockdown... when I considered those 'things' that may or may not be essential during or post the pandemic. The subject may be mis-leading in that a 'dress' seems like a superficial element when considering 'essentials' . However, it is a particularly special dress that I use for dance, which has inspired many of my artworks so the viewer, with this knowledge, may re-consider its essentiality. Also, hanging on a screen, the dress assumed a 2-dimentiality that fascinated and differed considerably from when it was worn + I was able to study and appreciate the surprising warmth of the 'black' (though I have actually used no black). When working, I decided to paint with the oils relatively dry, ie there was almost no linseed oil added...until the final layer. I believe that this approach has highlighted the painting's textural quality.

Currently working on a new series of paintings and drawings in response to Covid 19: 'Essentials/Non-essentials. For the past 23 years, I have been painting professionally in places with great, natural light: Barcelona, Cádiz, Whitstable and Granada....always learning something new in the process. My work is largely representative and includes several portraits, though more recently, landscapes and interiors too. Sometimes, I take huge risks and abandon my brush in favour of lavish injections of paint. Despite these seemingly random acts, precision is a concern along with a desire to respond honestly to my subject. When I make a portrait, as with all my work, I aim to create something meaningful. Composition is important to me-especially where there is background detail, adding to the narrative. However, for me, the face predominates. I have enjoyed looking at many sitters, exploring their faces and getting a sense of them + seeing how we respond to one another. I have exhibited widely/ internationally, including in Barcelona, Cadiz, New York, Edinburgh, Argentina and London, at The Mall Galleries.
