Most of my watercolors depict tense encounters or precarious situations, in order to explore the heightened state of awareness that arises from a pressing existential crisis. In this case, a cat has brought home a venomous coral snake but is now ignoring it. Like Schrodinger's cat in the famous thought experiment, the subject here might be alive or dead, already bitten or yet unharmed. The urge to mentally complete this story will make it one or the other, and the chosen outcome may reveal something about the viewer. Painted on Arches 140 lb. hot-press acid-free watercolor paper. The dimensions shown are for the painted area, not including an unpainted margin on each side. This painting will be shipped unframed.

Decades of dedication to the unforgiving medium of watercolor have given Paul Pitsker the control and mastery to make paintings that look uniquely different from most watercolors, with brilliant color, dramatic contrasts, and an almost photographic level of fine detail. His paintings depict staged dramas involving delicate creatures caught in absurd or poignant predicaments, to invite reflection on the fragility and transience and strangeness of life, as well as its intrinsic beauty. Paul Pitsker is a mentor to many thousands of artists of all ages on social media, sharing his tips and tricks for watercolor painting and answering questions from students as well as professional artists all around the world. Some of his watercolor choices are unconventional, such as painting only on ultra-smooth hot-press paper, or using a limited palette of just a half dozen paint colors chosen for their permanence and color intensity. The result of these unusual choices and the artist's complete control of the medium results in strikingly original artworks that attract attention and inspire ongoing contemplation and discussion.
