VIEW IN MY ROOM
“Pretty Woman” is created with recycled clothes I cut into pieces. Her hair is made of threads of ribbons I had no use for anymore. The ground and the roses are the same fabric, as one can see. I used an old designer vest with really soft and soothe fabric from my mother. I intended to connect this artwork to the film “Pretty Woman” with Julia Roberts. Why so? When I was I child I really liked this movie, but some time ago I watched it again and my experience was quite a different one and I see Pretty Women very critically. After all, she is a woman who depends on a rich guy and not on herself. And to me the overall story is typical and very sexist girl finds her prince narrative. What disgusted me most, was the scene with the other rich entitled man who was violent to her the moment she rejected him. However, my pretty woman wants to express a certain degree of transformation. She stands on her own, young, maybe naïve, but self-reliant, fragile, but elegant. Every aspect is blossoming which is underlined by the roses. Also, I wanted to express that beauty and youth are moments in time that vanish, just like beautiful rose petals fade. Lena Snow is a fine artist based in Germany who currently has her studio in a small town on the edge of the Black Forest (near Baden-Baden) where she is working on her latest artworks while keeping in touch with nature. Lena is specialized in female portraiture and sensual art with her main medium being paper. She earned a Master's degree at the University of Mannheim and Karlsruhe. "I explore various aspects of femininity and female identity in my paintings. My inspiration are personal stories of women I encountered, but also female characters in mythology, film, and literature. They are a new, powerful, and emancipated approach of one’s identity and sexuality, and at the same time they stand for empowerment for all women. For a long time only men have painted women, neglecting their personal stories of ambivalence, trauma and multifaceted nature, but it is time that women change the narrative and capture their unique stories by contributing to a new, empowered expression of elevated femininity." Lena has exhibited internationally, and has been published in several art and lifestyle magazines around the world. The award-winning artist is also editor of the international art magazine Goddessarts Magazine.
