Welded metal with powder coating, 32x28x60 cm, 10 kg. 'Amphora' was made as a piece of my cycle entitled 'The wight of chains', first presented on a solo show at the Kolarac Gallery, Belgrade. The introductory text for the exhibition catalogue outlines its major artistic intention: THE WEIGHT OF CHAINS Djordje Aralica once again presents his small sculptural narratives, this time embodied in rich texture of chains defying their own weight. Instead of gravitation which rules over his medium, and in accordance with his rhetoric of monumentalizing ephemeral visual experiences, he offers us to perceive the lightness of objects chained only by the artist’s eye. Usually, the place where I live at any given moment, with its daily routines, dictates the choice of my subject matter. As a rule, I am interested in the objects of everyday life, which appear to be surprisingly uniform wherever you go. In my work, they unite collective and personal experience. I never recycle real objects in a manner of an assemblage, but rather present my own associative, monumentalized interpretation of their form. I choose medium, mode of craftsmanship, both of which suggest underlying narrative context, but also provide monumental quality of architecture. My objects are reduced to a gallery format, but I see them as large-scale urban sculptures evocative of common human activities.
